The winding mountain roads in northern Vietnam are as beautiful and spectacular as they are unforgiving towards the inexperienced motorbike driver. Day 0

Hanoi to Ha Giang City by sleeper bus

On the night before your tour* you’ll be picked up at your ho(s)tel in Hanoi at around 7.30 PM. A sleeper bus will take you to Ha Giang City, where you will arrive at around 4 AM. There’s a simple private room at a homestay B&B available for you where you can sleep and take a hot shower before your Easy Rider comes to pick you up around 8 AM (on day 1). Obviously, they’ll take you for breakfast and/or coffee before departure. Self-riders will have some time to become accustomed to their vehicle.

*You will be picked up on the evening of the first date you select in the booking calendar (day 0).

Day 1

Ha Giang City – Heaven’s Gate – Tham Ma Mountain Pass – Lo Lo Village

We leave Ha Giang City and soon immerse ourselves in beautiful mountain landscape. We’ll traverse the steep Bac Sum Pass, leading us to the Quan Ba Pass or Heaven’s Gate – the unofficial entrance to the stone paradise that is the Dong Van Karst Plateau Unesco Global Geopark. From here, you have a panoramic view of the Tam Son valley, including the Twin Mountains or ‘fairy bosom’.

After we have lunch in Yen Minh, we will stop at the Tham Ma mountain pass, where you’ll meet H’mong children in traditional clothing. Our journey today continues to the magnificent Vuong Palace, built by the French for a local H’mong king in Chinese-H’mong style. At the end of the day we arrive in a village of the Lo Lo people. This is where we will spend the night in a homestay.

Day 2

Lo Lo Village – Lung Cu Flag Tower – Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Meo Vac

We hit the road again for a day packed with more highlights the Dong Van Karst Plateau Unesco Global Geopark has to offer. In the morning, we visit the northernmost point of Vietnam: Lung Cu flag tower. The 54 sq metred flag waving from the tower represents Vietnam’s 54 official nationalities.

The road between Dong Van and Meo Vac is considered the most beautiful part of the Ha Giang Loop and the Ma Pi Leng Pass might just be the reason for that! This impressive winding mountain road takes you to an altitude of 2000m. At the top you can enjoy a panoramic view of the pass, cliffs and valleys, rice paddies and the turquoise Nho Que river flowing through the Tu San Canyon.

At the end of the day we arrive in Meo Vac, where we have plenty of time to explore the town and enjoy the regional cuisine. We overnight in a hotel with private rooms.

Day 3

Meo Vac – Mau Due – Du Gia

Today, we continue our way to Mau Deu and the Lung Ho viewpoint, overlooking mountains dotted with rice terraces.

On our way to Du Gia, we visit a culturally unique village, peacefully populated by five different etnic minorities. At this colourful stop, you’ll learn more about the ways of the Dao, Tay, H’mong, Kinh and Lo Lo people. We’ll stay at a homestay run by a Tay family, where we enjoy a family style dinner. We spend the night in a homestay in Du Gia.

Day 4

Du Gia – Du Gia Waterfall – Ha Giang City

Right after breakfast, we hit the road to drive to the Du Gia waterfall, an excellent place for swimming and cliffdiving. Along the road, we will experience a bit of daily hilltribe life as the villagers go about their usual business of farming, handicraft and selling their produce. We’ll also visit the Lung Khuy cave, one of the most impressive caves of northern Vietnam due to its height and an overwhelming density of stalagmites and stalactites.

On the last part of our journey back to Ha Giang City, we enjoy the wonderful views of valleys full of rice paddies. The tour ends with a little sightseeing in Ha Giang City.

Back to Hanoi by sleeper bus?

Do you wish to go back to Hanoi? Our Easy Riders can arrange a ticket for the (sleeper) bus back to Hanoi at around 9.30 PM. The ticket is about 400.000 VND (about €15). You will arrive around 6 AM at the My Dinh bus station in Hanoi.

The program above is a general description of the route. All tours are subject to change based on your Easy Rider’s own insight, depending on factors as weather, traffic and time. Private tour of 1 to 6 people

Contrary to our other tours, we offer the Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider tour only as a private tour for 1 to 6 people. Each group is guided by at least 1 experienced, licensed and English-speaking Easy Rider. At least 1 person rides pillion, sitting behind the Easy Rider on their 250-400cc motorcycle. The other 1 to 5 people drive themselves on a semi-automatic 125cc motorbike or manual clutch dirtbike (Honda XR 150cc). This way, each member of the group can experience driving in the mountains of northern Vietnam. The fact that you can alternate between riding pillion and self-driving enhances safe travel and a more relaxed experience on the challenging mountain roads.

There are a lot of tour agencies offering the Ha Giang Loop as ‘Easy Rider experience’ and quality differs greatly. We’ve seen the most astonishing things: groups of up to 40 people, guides driving in flip-flops or without helmets, scooters that couldn’t make it to the top on steep climbs… On some tours, ‘accomodation included’ means sharing a dorm with 15 others. Great fun, but maybe not the best way to recharge for another day of focused driving on small winding mountain roads. All we’re saying is: make sure you know what you’re getting before booking anywhere!

Departure: daily departure by sleeper bus

This tours departs daily from Hanoi by sleeper bus. You’ll be picked up from your ho(s)tel in Hanoi in the evening of the first date you select in the booking calendar (day 0), meaning the actual motorbiking starts the next morning in Ha Giang City (day 1). At the end of day 4, the tour ends in Ha Giang City. It’s possible to leave for Hanoi by sleeper bus the same night, where you arrive the next morning around 6 AM at the My Dinh bus station.

What is an Easy Rider motorbike tour?

An Easy Rider is a Vietnamese guide on a motorbike. Our Easy Riders are English-speaking, licensed tour guides who know the ins and outs of Vietnamese roads, nature, history and culture. Touring with an Easy Rider means that you comfortably sit on the back of the motorbike behind the guide – wearing protective gear – while you travel from one city to the next, stopping regularly to enjoy sights, local experiences, drinks and meals.

Tours start between 8 and 9 AM, and end between 3 and 5 PM. Your Eay Riders picks you up and drops you off at your accommodation. Multiple day tours include overnight stays.

How to book (availability, payment)

Availability
Use the calendar at the top of the tour page to check availability for the preferred date(s).

Booking
On the tour page, fill in the number of people you book for – choose between sitting behind the guide and self-driving – and select the date(s). Click ‘book now’ and follow the steps to complete your booking.

Payment
You pay a small deposit by online payment; the remaining amount you pay at the start of the tour.

Confirmation

How far in advance should I book?
You can book tours departing from Dalat, Hoi An and Hue shortly beforehand. For popular multiple-day tours (like the Ha Giang Loop), we advice you to book ahead. It’s okay if you don’t know your pick-up or drop-off location yet, you can let us know later.

Self-driving & International Driving Permit

On the tour, you can drive yourself if you are:

a party of at least two people; on every tour at least one person sits behind an Easy Rider.
in possession of a valid motorcycle license (A1 or A2), and;
in possession of a valid 1968-version of the International Driving Permit (IDP), obtained in your home country;

We will make sure to get you a well maintained motorbike (manual or clutch) and protective gear. The rate for sitting on the back or driving your own bike is the same, gasoline is included.

For safety reasons, we don’t allow passengers on the motorbikes for self-driving.

Luggage

Each person can bring one (1) backpack or suitcase (max. 20 kg / 44 lbs) and one (1) daypack or handbag on the tour. Even pretty big hard scale suitcases can be tied to the back of the motorbike as long as they are not over 20 kg (44 lbs); it’s more about weight distribution than size.

All luggage is put in waterproof bags and tied to the front or back of the motorcycle.

Is it a private tour or do we ride in groups?

On most occassions, it’s just you and your Easy Rider(s): a private tour.

During peak seasons (July & August, November – February), we sometimes combine multiple bookings to a small group. This group then consists of all the guests who have booked the same route on the same date(s). This is most common on our popular day tours (covering the Hai Van Pass).

Our Ha Giang Loop tours are always private tours. For us, this is an important way to distinguish our tours in this region from the awfully big groups some operators ride with.
