Sights & Highlights

Day 0

Hanoi to Ha Giang City by sleeper bus

On the night before your tour* you’ll be picked up at your ho(s)tel in Hanoi at around 7.30 PM. A sleeper bus will take you to Ha Giang City, where you will arrive at around 4 AM. After arriving in Ha Giang City, a minibus will take you directly to a B&B, where there’s a simple private room available for you to sleep and take a hot shower before your Easy Rider comes to pick you up around 8 AM (on day 1). Self-riders will have some time to become accustomed to their vehicle.

*Select the date of the evening you would like to be picked up from Hanoi (day 0) as the first date of your tour in the booking calendar!

Day 1

Ha Giang City – Heaven’s Gate – Yen Minh – Vuong Palace – Lung Cu – Dong Van

We leave Ha Giang City and soon immerse ourselves in beautiful mountain landscape. We’ll traverse the steep Bac Sum Pass, leading us to the Quan Ba Pass or Heaven’s Gate – the unofficial entrance to the stone paradise that is the Dong Van Karst Plateau Unesco Global Geopark. From here, you have a panoramic view of the Tam Son valley, including the Twin Mountains or ‘fairy bosom’. On the way, we have several stops to see the local life of the H’mong people, including traditional blacksmiths and rice field workers.

We have lunch in Yen Minh. Afterwards we visit the magnificent Vuong Palace, built by the French for a local H’mong king in Chinese-H’mong style, and continue to the northernmost point of Vietnam: Lung Cu flag tower. The 54 sq metred flag waving from the tower represents Vietnam’s 54 official nationalities.

At the end of the day we arrive in Dong Van, where we can explore the night market and enjoy the local cuisine in the old quarter. We overnight in a hotel.

Day 2

Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Tu San Canyon – Meo Vac – Lung Tam – Du Gia

The road between Dong Van and Meo Vac is considerd the most beautiful part of the loop and the Ma Pi Leng Pass might just be the reason for that! This impressive winding mountain road takes you to an altitude of 2000m. We’ll have coffee at the top, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the pass, cliffs and valleys, rice paddies and the turquoise Nho Que river flowing through the Tu San Canyon.

We have lunch in Meo Vac and continue our way to the Lung Ho viewpoint and Mau Due. On our way to Du Gia, we visit a culturally unique village, peacefully populated by five different etnic minorities. At this colourful stop, you’ll learn more about the ways of the Dao, Tay, H’mong, Kinh and Lo Lo people. We also visit Lung Tam Linen Weaving Village, nested between rocky peaks and renowned for its traditional brocade weaving craft. We’ll stay at a nice, locally-owned bungalow, where you’ll have a private room.

Day 3

Du Gia – Du Gia Waterfall – Bac Me – Ha Giang City

In the morning, we will experience a bit of daily hilltribe life as the villagers go about their usual business of farming, handicraft and selling their produce. After breakfast, we hit the road to drive to the Du Gia waterfall, an excellent place for swimming and cliffdiving. Next, we’ll visit the Lung Khuy cave, one of the most impressive caves of northern Vietnam due to its height and an overwhelming density of stalagmites and stalactites. On the last part of our journey back to Ha Giang City, we enjoy the wonderful views of valleys full of rice paddies. The tour ends with a little sightseeing in Ha Giang City.

Pick-up & Drop-off

This tours departs from Hanoi by sleeper bus. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Hanoi in the evening of the first date you select in the booking calendar (day 0), meaning the actual motorbiking starts the next morning in Ha Giang City (day 1). After you arrive in Ha Giang City with the sleeper bus, a minibus will take you directly to a simple B&B, where you can sleep and shower before your Easy Rider comes to pick you up in around 8 AM for the tour.

At the end of day 3, the tour ends in Ha Giang City. You’ll be dropped off at the accommodation of your choice. Make reservations before arrival, because our riders only make one stop for drop-off. It’s also possible to be dropped off at the bus station.

Back to Hanoi

It’s possible to leave for Hanoi by sleeper bus the same night, at 9.30 PM. You arrive the next morning around 6 AM at the My Dinh bus station. This return ticket can be arranged upon request, there are no extra costs.

Safety first

Heard or read that the Ha Giang Loop is a must-do in Vietnam, but also that it can be quite dangerous to do by yourself? It’s true: the winding mountain roads in northeastern Vietnam are as beautiful and spectacular as they are unforgiving towards the inexperienced motorbike driver.

Don’t neglect your safety and allow yourself an awesome motorbike adventure with our Easy Riders! We’ve been around since 1991, use only high-quality equipment and our English-speaking guides are licensed, experienced and fun.

Our Ha Giang Loop tours are private tours. We don’t combine smaller bookings into groups. Overnight stays are in good quality private (double) rooms, away from the party scene. Meals are included. You ride pillion, sitting behind the Easy Rider on their 250-400cc motorcycle, wearing protective gear and a helmet. Experienced motorcyclists in possession of a valid motorcycle license combined with an International Driving Permit (IDP) can drive themselves if they want to.

There are a lot of tour agencies offering the Ha Giang Loop as ‘Easy Rider experience’ and quality differs greatly. We’ve seen the most astonishing things: groups of up to 40 people, guides driving in flip-flops or without helmets, scooters that couldn’t make it to the top on steep climbs… On some tours, ‘accommodation included’ means sharing a dorm with 15 others. Great fun, but maybe not the best way to recharge for another day of focused driving on small winding mountain roads. All we’re saying is: make sure you know what you’re getting before booking anywhere!

What is an Easy Rider motorbike tour?

An Easy Rider is a Vietnamese guide on a motorbike. Our Easy Riders are English-speaking, licensed tour guides who know the ins and outs of Vietnamese roads, nature, history and culture. Touring with an Easy Rider means that you comfortably sit on the back of the motorbike behind the guide – wearing protective gear – while you travel from one city to the next, stopping regularly to enjoy sights, local experiences, drinks and meals.

Tours start between 8 and 9 AM, and end between 3 and 5 PM. Your Easy Rider picks you up and drops you off at your accommodation. Multiple day tours include overnight stays.

How to book (availability, payment)

Availability

Booking
On the tour page, fill in the number of people you book for – choose between sitting behind the guide and self-driving – and select the date(s). Click ‘book now’ and follow the steps to complete your booking.

Payment
You pay a small deposit by online payment; the remaining amount you pay at the start of the tour.

Confirmation
You receive an automatically generated booking confirmation. Within 48 hours of booking, our head Easy Rider Mr. Vu will also email you to confirm your tour.

How far in advance should I book?
You can book tours departing from Dalat, Hoi An and Hue shortly beforehand. For popular multiple-day tours (like the Ha Giang Loop), we advice you to book ahead. It’s okay if you don’t know your pick-up or drop-off location yet, you can let us know later.

Self-driving & International Driving Permit

On the tour, you can drive yourself if you are:

a party of at least two people; on every tour at least one person sits behind an Easy Rider.
in possession of a valid motorcycle license (A1 or A2), and;
in possession of a valid 1968-version of the International Driving Permit (IDP), obtained in your home country;

We will make sure to get you a well maintained motorbike (manual or clutch) and protective gear. The rate for sitting on the back or driving your own bike is the same, gasoline is included.

For safety reasons, we don’t allow passengers on the motorbikes for self-driving.

Luggage

Each person can bring one (1) backpack or suitcase (max. 20 kg / 44 lbs) and one (1) daypack or handbag on the tour. Even pretty big hard scale suitcases can be tied to the back of the motorbike as long as they are not over 20 kg (44 lbs); it’s more about weight distribution than size.

All luggage is put in waterproof bags and tied to the front or back of the motorcycle.

Is it a private tour or do we ride in groups?

On most occassions, it’s just you and your Easy Rider(s): a private tour.

During peak seasons (July & August, November – February), we sometimes combine multiple bookings to a small group. This group then consists of all the guests who have booked the same route on the same date(s). This is most common on our popular day tours (covering the Hai Van Pass).

Our Ha Giang Loop tours are always private tours. For us, this is an important way to distinguish our tours in this region from the awfully big groups some operators ride with.
