The winding mountain roads in northeastern Vietnam are as beautiful and spectacular as they are unforgiving towards the inexperienced motorbike driver. Sights & Highlights

Day 1

Hanoi – Lang Son

Your Easy Rider will pick you up at your accommodation in Hanoi at 8.30 AM. While your luggage is being tied to the motorbike, you put on your protective gear. Helmets on – and we are ready to go! We are about to explore the northwest of Vietnam during a marvelous adventure on a motorbike.

On our way to Lang Son, we pass plenty of rice fields. We’ll get off the motorbike to learn how sesame rice paper is made and where custard apples grow. You can taste the fruit directly from the orchard! Next, we check out a plywood factory to see how this commodity is made. At the end of the day we arrive in Lang Son, where we visit the Nhi Thang cave and Tam Thanh pagoda.

Day 2

Lang Son – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Phia Thap

After breakfast, we hit the road and ride for the famous Ban Gioc Waterfall. This waterfall is one of Vietnam’s most well-known waterfalls – it’s image decorates plenty of local hotels and restaurants. It’s the fourth largest waterfall in the world that spans two countries (Vietnam and China), right after the Iguazu Falls, Victoria Falls and Niagara Falls.

We continue to Phuc Sen village, to see how local craftspeople maken traditional farm tools by hand. In the area, we also get to see how incense is made by the H’mong people. Before we head into Phia Thap village, we visit the Nguom Ngao cave, one of the larger cave systems in Vietnam. In Phia Thap, we stay with a Tay family. We learn about their culture and enjoy a delicious family dinner.

Day 3

Phia Thap – Angel Eyes Mountain – Ma Pia Pass – Bao Lac

After breakfast, we ride through the Vietnamese countryside. On the way, we visit the Nung people and see how they make rice vermicelli. Next, we continue on a mountain road, to visit the Angel Eyes Mountain (Nui Thung). The mountain derives its name from a hole of 50 meter in diameter, located spectacularly right in its heart. On the way to Cao Bang, we visit villages of the Tay, Nung, and H’mong people.

After lunch, on our way to Bao Lac, we cross the Me Pia Pass. Before we ride the 15 (!) hairpin turns, you can climb to a viewpoint where you can enjoy a magnificent view of northeast Vietnam. We end the day in Bao Lac, where we sleep in a homestay.

Day 4

Bao Lac – Meo Vac – Tu San Canyon – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Dong Van

In the morning, we ride the winding mountain roads to Meo Vac, from where we join the famous Ha Giang Loop. After passing Meo Vac, we descend to the turquoise Nho Que river, to enjoy a boat ride sailing between the majestic cliffs of the canyon. We’ll stop at a secluded beach where you can have a refreshing drink and swim in the clear water. Next, we drive back up and have coffee at the top, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the pass, cliffs and valleys, rice paddies and the river flowing through the Tu San Canyon.

The road between Meo Vac and Dong Van is considerd the most beautiful part of the Ha Giang Loop and the Ma Pi Leng Pass might just be the reason for that! This impressive winding mountain road takes you to an altitude of 2000m. At the end of the day we arrive in Dong Van, where we can explore the night market and enjoy the local cuisine in the old quarter. We overnight in a hotel with private rooms.

Day 5

Dong Van – Vuong Palace – Tham Ma Pass – Ha Giang City

After breakfast, we hit the road again for a day packed with more highlights the Dong Van Karst Plateau Unesco Global Geopark has to offer. We start the day by visiting the magnificent Vuong Palace, built by the French for a local H’mong king in Chinese-H’mong style. Next, we will stop at the Tham Ma mountain pass, where you’ll meet H’mong children in traditional clothing.

On the last part of our journey back to Ha Giang City, we enjoy the wonderful views of valleys full of rice paddies. The tour ends with a little sightseeing in Ha Giang City.

Night 5

Back to Hanoi by sleeper bus

Around 9.30 PM, our Easy Riders will put you on the sleeper bus back to Hanoi. You will arrive around 6 AM at the My Dinh bus station in Hanoi.

Small-group tour of 2 to 6 people

Contrary to our other tours, we offer the Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider tour only as a small-group tour for 2 to 6 people. Each group is guided by at least 1 experienced, licensed and English-speaking Easy Riders. At least 1 person rides pillion, sitting behind the Easy Rider on their 250-400cc motorcycle. The other 1 to 5 people drive themselves on a semi-automatic 125cc motorbike or manual clutch dirtbike (Honda XR 150cc). This way, each member of the group can experience driving in the mountains of northern Vietnam. The fact that you can alternate between riding pillion and self-driving enhances safe travel and a more relaxed experience on the challenging mountain roads.

There are a lot of tour agencies offering the Ha Giang Loop as ‘Easy Rider experience’ and quality differs greatly. We’ve seen the most astonishing things: groups of up to 40 people, guides driving in flip-flops or without helmets, scooters that couldn’t make it to the top on steep climbs… On some tours, ‘accomodation included’ means sharing a dorm with 15 others. Great fun, but maybe not the best way to recharge for another day of focused driving on small winding mountain roads. All we’re saying is: make sure you know what you’re getting before booking anywhere!

Arriving by bus, train, or airplane?

We can arrange pick-ups and drop-offs at bus or train stations if you arrive before 9 AM in the morning. Start your tour fresh of the night bus or train – we’ll stop for breakfast along the way! Provide us with the necessary information (departure and arrival station, name of the bus company, estimated time of arrival) by adding it to the booking form.

At the end of day 5, you return to Hanoi by sleeper bus, where you arrive the next morning around 6 AM at the My Dinh bus station.
