Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
That depends on your country of origin. Citizens of 22 countries can enter Vietnam without a visa. Citizens of another 80 countries can apply online for an e-visa. If your country is not on one of those lists, you will need to apply for a Vietnamese visa at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate.

Visitors from the following countries may enter visa free, and stay for the indicated number of days. To stay beyond this number of days, you may apply for a visa extension upon your arrival in Vietnam.
Asia
Brunei, Myanmar – 14 days.
Japan, South Korea – 15 days.
The Philippines – 21 days.
Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand – 30 days.
Europe
Belarus, Denmark, Italy, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom – 15 days.
Apply for a Vietnam visa
To get a visa, your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months at the time you enter Vietnam.
There are two ways to get a visa for Vietnam:
- you can apply for an e-visa for Vietnam online;
- you apply for the visa directly at your local Vietnamese embassy or consulate.
Apply for an e-visa Vietnam
The e-visa for Vietnam is the cheapest and easiest way to enter the country. Citizens of 80 countries are eligible for this type of visa.
The e-visa is valid at 37 international border posts. Among the border posts, you will find almost all international airports, ports and border crossings between Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos and China.
You can apply for an e-visa online through the official website of the Vietnam Immigration Department. Be careful to submit your e-visa application through this official website, the Vietnamese embassy warns against several illegal providers.

Filling in the online form takes about 10 minutes. When applying, you will need several documents:
- Your itinerary – the dates you land and leave in particular – to fill in all the dates;
- A credit card, to pay the fee of $25 (2022);
- Scan of a passport photo;
- Scan of your passport.
After completing the visa application, you will be told that you will receive notice within three working days whether your Vietnam visa application has been granted. Until 14 August 2023. the visa is valid for a maximum of 30 days and is single-entry – meaning you can enter the country once (1) From 15 August 2023 onwards, the e-visa duration is increased from 30 days to maximum of 90 days, and valid for multiple entries. The visa is valid from the date you have indicated to arrive in Vietnam. It is therefore possible to enter the country after this date – before is unfortunately not possible.
Advantages and disadvantages of applying for a Vietnam e-visa
- Advantages: cheaper than through the embassy, possible from home and visa application for the whole family/travelling party
- Disadvantages: only one type of visa (30-day & single-entry) and longer waiting time at customs in Vietnam (take note: from 15 August 2023 onwards, the visa is valid for 90 days & multiple entries)
Apply for a Vietnam visa at the embassy or consulate
You can also apply for a Vietnam visa in advance at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate.
The embassies indicate that visa application can take around four working days. The closer to busy holiday periods you visit the embassy, the busier it is likely to be. To apply for a Vietnam visa directly at the embassy, you will need several documents:
- Completed Visa Application Form;
- Debit card or cash, to pay the fee (usually starting at $60/€60). The fee depends on the number of entries and visa duration;
- Your passport;
- A passport photo;

Advantages and disadvantages applying for a visa directly at the Vietnamese embassy
- Advantages: multiple visa types (in terms of duration and entries) and you don’t have to wait for your visa on arrival;
- Disadvantages: travel time if you don’t live close to an embassy, waiting time, and considerably more expensive than e-visa.
