In the northeastern corner of Vietnam, 272 km from Hanoi, you’ll find the Ban Gioc Waterfall (Thac Ban Gioc), one of the most beautiful and impressive waterfalls of the country. With 300 meters in width and a 30 meter drop, it is the biggest waterfall of Vietnam. The thundering effect of the water hitting the rocks can be heard from afar. The waterfall is located in Cao Bang Province and decorates plenty of local hotels and restaurants as the region’s unofficial coat of arms.
The Ban Gioc Waterfall crosses the border with China, making it the fourth largest waterfall in the world that spans two countries, right after the Iguazu Falls, Victoria Falls and Niagara Falls. Due to thousands of years of erosion, the Ban Gioc appears to be two separate waterfalls most of the time. After monsoon season (May – September), when the water of the Quay Son river is high, it can form one giant waterfall again.
The best way to get to the Ban Gioc Waterfall is from Cao Bang or Ha Giang. Both cities can be easily reached from Hanoi by bus. From there, it’s easy to find tour operators who can take you to the Ban Gioc Waterfall, as it is one of the main attractions in the area. Since Cao Bang Province borders Ha Giang Province and the mountaineous area is simply breathtaking, most people hop on the motorbike with an Easy Rider and combine the Ha Giang Loop with a visit to the Ban Gioc Waterfall!
Not yet overrun by tourists, Cao Bang offers a more quiet base to explore north(eastern) Vietnam than Ha Giang or Sapa. Apart from the Ban Gioc Waterfall, interesting sights include the Nguom Ngao cave system, Phia Tap Village and Nui Mat Than – also known as Angel Eye Mountain or God’s Eye Mountain because of the 50-meter wide hole in the heart of the mountain. For spectacular winding mountain roads in the area, consider the “14 stories high” Me Pja Pass (Deo Me Pja) and scenic Ma Phuc Pass (Deo Ma Phuc).
If it’s food that takes you to the Cao Bang Province, try local dishes such as banh cuon Cao Bang, light rice flour pancakes filled with pork, green onions and coriander and served with a hearty broth, roasted duck (vit quay) and the regional pho variety pho chua, also called ‘sour noodles’. If you are more of a sweet tooth or looking for a eatable souvenir, go for banh khao: sweet sticky rice flour cakes with fillings of roasted sesame seeds, mung beans or crushed peanuts.
Visit the Ban Gioc Waterfall on a guided motorbike tour and ride the Ha Giang Loop on a 5-day tour starting from Ha Giang City, Hanoi or Sapa. Tours from Hanoi and Sapa depart by sleeper bus. You can also go the other way around, starting in Cao Bang and finishing in Ha Giang City. All these tours are private tours (minimum 2 people): no groups and overnight stays in your own (double) room, in good quality locally run accommodations.
The route also includes top sights such as Angel Eye Mountain, the Nguom Ngao cave, Tu San Canyon and mountain passes such as Ma Pi Leng and Me Pja. You’ll learn more about several local communities and their culture and craft, visit their villages and try local dishes.
All our Ban Gioc Waterfall & Ha Giang Loop tours ending in Ha Giang City or Cao Bang include an (optional) sleeper bus ticket to Hanoi on the last day of the tour upon request. After the tour, your Easy Rider can drop you and your luggage off at the bus station.
